Time to take notice...

Art is something that we consider to be a gift to everyday life. But as Walter Benjamin says, “ In principle a work of art has always been reproducible.” When you read something like that, it hits home. There are so many things we take for granted in everyday life. It’s only until something terrible or life altering happens that we truly take notice to the little things. But because of things like this “I am now so thankful for allthe hard work that others do.”  With the recent events in the northern part of the country sometimes we have to stop in reflect. Where I come from storms like that can happen several times of year. Even though it is something we are used to it doesn’t make it any easier to hear how people have lost their home or are without power. I recently heard that some people may go over a month without power in the winter and I truly hope that’s not the case for those families. So for this post today I just want everyone to reflect on the little things and think of all the time and effort that some people to make sure we are safe. We shouldn’t wait till something goes wrong, we should take notice all the time.

Winter is Coming...

It’s the end of October and it’s beginning to look like winter is starting. Well in most places that is, like in the Midwest where the color of the leaves has already turned into different colors to bring out the feelings of fall. But where I come from its still perfect beach weather and putting on a light jacket for a few hours is considered “cold”. But that’s the beauty of this place people can view it as a permanent vacation. But for some places winter brings out some of the best attributes of their city, I have always liked the look of London in the wintertime. There is something peaceful about seeing Big Ben against that backdrop. This time of year is all about traditions and family, which makes this brisk October morning a bit bittersweet. Knowing for most of the holidays I will be away from the people I care about because of work and school is disheartening. But I have to look at it as part of a bigger picture, that only part of the work is done. Hopefully all this hard work leads to decisions one day that allow me to choose where I want to spend my holidays. Maybe in the future I decide I want to take in the cold London weather and go for some warm tea. Or maybe I decide I want to spend my “winter” sitting by a beach and taking in the sun. Either way big changes are coming, I just hope in the end I’m ready for them. I feel when the time comes ill just let the breeze take in whichever direction I’m suppose to go…

Under Construction

The jungle we come from is always changing and evolving. The city where I grew up never feels the same when I go back anymore. There is always some new building that is about the pierce the blue sky, or a familiar place that no longer exists. All these changes can bring different emotions to me. But I guess this is all part of growing up right? People change, places change, and it’s a part of the narrative that we call life. I look at this image of the skyline changing and it makes me have questions about all the changes. Maybe all this change will be better for this city, that it will improve its overall quality and make it more beautiful. Or maybe it represents the new identity that it will have, a different culture and feel than what I am used to. It doesn’t mean change is bad its just my “home” probably isn’t my home anymore. This might be something I have to come to grips with. Instead of looking back on this city, maybe its time to look forward because that’s the part of my life that is under construction. My future is just building its foundation. What my future looks like now will change shape and grow over the next few years, as I get ready to graduate college. Who knows where I will be 5 years from now. I might be living a comfortable life in the Midwest, or maybe ill do my best impression of Andre chasing a girl like Nadja around Paris. Only time will tell. I guess I shouldn’t be afraid of all the changes that are about to happen to my life, I should embrace it. Much like this picture my future is under construction and the final outcome hopefully will look better than I ever imagined.

Skylines

It's not everyday you can sit back and take in a city skyline like the one in this photo. What makes skylines to me so intriguing is the look and feel each one has. Each one has its own story and the reason for the way it is.  Some can be recognized at a moments glance like New York City and others take more time or research to figure out such as Knoxville. I look at the skyline in this photo and several things come to mind. Home is the first thought, it represents a place where I come from and part of who I am today. Scope is another, as you are driving through those streets or standing inside any one of those buildings sometimes you forget how large one area can be. This photo also represents the past to me, where my childhood took place. But as I get older an image like this may be all that reminds me where I came from. As my life progresses I will make life and career choices that may push me further away from this place. I consider the city I currently live in and the skyline that it has. While it may not be to the visual sight of the one from home, it has characteristics of what I love about Tallahassee so much. The skyline isn’t as big or as impressive but it also represents the small town feel that make it enjoyable. I think of Doak Campbell and Florida State University and all that the school and the football team represents in Tallahassee. It’s the heart and soul of this place, while the beach, palm trees and large city feel are the heart and soul of the place in the photo. They have very different skylines, but they are two skylines that are apart of my life and places that I can call home. I wonder as I get older what other skylines will one day have a special meaning to me as well…

A Peaceful Day

Living in Tallahassee for the last several years I find that there’s something lacking in the area. The lack of the beach is the only thing I wish this area had. There’s nothing like being on a beach having the warm rays of the sun reach out and touch you. Those so many things to entice the five senses like the smell of the ocean breeze in your nostrils, and the slight breeze coming off the ocean. Even having the sand get stuck between your toes is all part of the experience. I personally always like hearing the sound of the waves crashing into the beach. There’s something quite relaxing about it. Just looking at this picture it gives off the sense of peace and relaxation. Some people prefer it to be crowded and tons of things going on. I find scenes like this to be the best. Where it’s just you and nature and nothing disturbing the peaceful relationship. A day like in this picture is something I dream about when I want to go on vacations. Somewhere where I can relax with a cold beer and just enjoy the beautiful weather. Here’s hoping there’s a day like this in my future…
